Perhaps more impressive than all that is that the author apparently managed to finish all this in about two and a half years of work, cranking out chapters twice every week like clockwork. This story pretty much has everything that any fan of superheroes could want: inventive superpowers and more importantly, creative uses of said superpowers, superb character development and very satisfying inter-character interaction, masterful handling of tension and cliffhangers, a rich setting with mysteries such as the origin of superpowers that are slowly explained over the course of the story, giant kaiju-style threats that all characters must team up together to drive back, and a fantastically written overall arc that must have been planned right from the beginning. Soon enough our protagonist becomes embroiled in ever greater and more earth-shaking events and the whole thing ends with a massive battle that redefines what it means to be epic in the superhero genre. But as you read on, the camera pulls back and you realize what a massive and well-developed world this story is set in, with tons of characters each with intriguing side stories of their own. It starts out on a small scale in a high school setting and could easily be dismissed as yet another Young Adult story. It’s a superhero story with a teen-aged girl as its protagonist. Like many others, I was drawn in by Eliezer Yudkowsky’s recommendation. That’s easily over a dozen regular books. Q4b: Ebooks… what if I made one for personal use, or to share with a best friend or family member?Ī4b: If it’s not obvious to the publishers and not known to Wildbow, then no problem arises. So I finally finished reading Worm, a massive web serial that clocks in at over 1.6 million words. If you guys see such a site or person out in the wild, maybe send them a message, point them here/copy paste all this, or ask them politely to quit it, and if they don’t, let Wildbow know so he can figure it out. Wildbow has already missed out on one opportunity to get Worm out there because the other party got scared off by the mass-distribution via. There’s lots of really easy and obvious answers to all of these points, but in reality, publishers are skittish. There’s just too many questions of rights and ownership (who is the actual creator/distributor? Who was first?), whether the author really has control over their own property, and if the publisher feels it is worthwhile to get the rights to distribute the ebook if it’s already being put out there. For the time being, ebooks are not being distributed, and Wildbow would ask that people don’t set up sites, share scrapers or otherwise mass-distribute them. Unfortunately, dissemination of ebooks sort of muddies the waters and hampers those negotiations, whether it’s Wildbow doing it or others. He’d really like to do stuff like keep the website up and keep the integrity of his work, and the fact that the works are getting reads, money, reviews, fanart, and such really help with negotiating that. The current plan is to get the editing done and shop it around – with the established fanbase being what it is, Wildbow has a lot of freedom. Q4: Ebook? Can I have a copy? Is there going to be one? What about Worm?Ī4: Ebooks and the like are just about inevitable – Wildbow is in talks with an agent and has talked to some major publishers.
